VIETPLAN CITY GUIDE

Hanoi

A northern trip split between the Old Quarter's energy and West Lake's calm

NOTGARIMPublished 2026-08-05 · reviewed 2026-08-17Rechecked 17 August 2026 against public routing between Noi Bai Airport, Hoan Kiem, West Lake and Ninh Binh.
01 · STAY AREAS

The right stay area solves half the itinerary

01

Old Quarter · Hoan Kiem

Markets, street food, performances and the lake are mostly walkable.

Best: first 2–3 nights
02

French Quarter

Calmer streets and more upscale hotels suit couples and slower evenings.

Best: couples and premium
03

West Lake · Tay Ho

View cafés and residences make a strong second base for a longer stay.

Best: 2+ nights
04

Ha Long Bay · Bai Chay

Cruising is the focus; an overnight boat or Bai Chay stay gives more value than a rushed return day.

Best: cruise or 1 night
05

Ninh Binh · Tam Coc

Group Trang An, Hang Mua and Tam Coc, and stay overnight for quieter early hours.

Best: day trip or 1 night
02 · WHERE TO STAY

Compare stay areas by trip length and priorities

Old Quarter · Hoan Kiem

Best forFirst visits, walking, alley food and short stays

StrengthsThe lake, Old Quarter and French Quarter connect on foot, with plentiful tour pickup options.

Trade-offsWeekend pedestrian controls and lane noise can affect access, and some hotels cannot be reached directly by car.

Airport
About 40–70 minutes by car; allow for Red River bridge traffic
Short stay
The first-choice no-move base for three nights
Long stay
Keep the hotel on four nights and visit West Lake for a half day

West Lake · Tay Ho

Best forRepeat visits, cafes, residences and slower longer stays

StrengthsLake-view cafes and larger rooms make it a comfortable residential base after central sightseeing.

Trade-offsThe district is too spread out for walking alone, and Old Quarter returns lengthen at rush hour.

Airport
About 30–55 minutes by car; the airport direction is simpler than Hoan Kiem but varies by exact location
Short stay
Better as a cafe half day than the main base on a first three-night trip
Long stay
On a repeat stay of five or more nights, consider it as one base instead of Hoan Kiem

Ninh Binh · Tam Coc

Best forBoats, temples, Hang Mua and early-morning landscapes

StrengthsAn overnight opens Tam Coc before and after the Hanoi day-tour crowds.

Trade-offsIt is roughly two to two and a half hours each way, and an overnight on a three- or four-night trip trades away a city day and adds a hotel move.

Airport
A direct Ninh Binh-to-Noi Bai transfer is too long to recommend on departure day
Short stay
Skip it on three nights and protect a full Hanoi city day
Long stay
On four nights, use one day trip without moving hotels; consider an overnight from five nights
03 · DAILY FLOW

A practical order that keeps travel short

Arrival day

A Hoan Kiem loop

After check-in, keep to the lake, an alley dinner and one café.

City day

Choose one and keep the following morning light.

Longer stay

Slow down at West Lake

04 · TRANSPORT

Practical travel between zones

Noi Bai Airport → Hoan KiemAbout 40–70 min by car

Allow for Red River bridge traffic at rush hour.

Old Quarter ↔ West LakeAbout 15–35 min by car

Hanoi ↔ Ninh BinhAbout 2–2.5 hours each way

Keep the next morning light after a day trip.

08 · DECISION GUIDE

The decisions to make before booking

01

Hoan Kiem or West Lake?

Choose Hoan Kiem for a first visit; choose West Lake for repeat, longer and cafe-focused stays.

Hoan Kiem covers core sights on foot, while West Lake's scale adds more car travel.

02

Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh?

Choose Ha Long for a cruise and seascape; choose Ninh Binh for boats, temples and land scenery. Pick one on a three- or four-night trip.

Combining both repeats early departures and long road transfers on consecutive days.

03

Ha Long day trip or overnight?

On trips of five nights or more, stay on a cruise or in Bai Chay; on shorter trips, use a day tour with expressway transfers.

An overnight reduces transfer fatigue but adds weather and luggage considerations.

09 · OPERATOR NOTE

The operator rule that shapes this city plan

For three nights, keep one Hoan Kiem hotel and focus on the city. Add one Ninh Binh day trip only with a fourth night, and never stack Ha Long and Ninh Binh back to back if you want recovery time.
10 · METHODOLOGY

How the budget and route are estimated

Budget range

Ranges combine return flights, the selected hotel class, core meals, transport and sightseeing for one adult over five days and four nights, with room for booking-time variation.

Route judgement

We prioritize practical driving time, rush hour, airport direction and hotel-moving days over straight-line distance. Nearby areas are grouped and long returns are limited.

Information review

Editorial travel notes are cross-checked against public maps and booking channels. Prices and hours are not live guarantees and must be rechecked before booking.

BEFORE BOOKING

Final checks before booking

  • Train Street access changes with local controls; check on the day.
  • For a three- or four-night trip, choose Ha Long or Ninh Binh rather than both.
